7.9. Starting bamboo suspensions

This workshop is for you if you already have experience with semisuspension or full suspension using a ring and want to gain experience tying with bamboo - exploring its differences, challenges, and possibilities. The workshop is also suitable if you’ve already tied with bamboo but want to develop your skills further, deepen your techniques, or gain new tips and perspectives.

The workshop includes:

  • Theory on tying with bamboo (safety, risks, benefits, differences between ring and bamboo, etc.)

  • Safe uplines for bamboo suspension

  • Possibilities with bamboo bondage: how to use the full length of the bamboo, and how to adapt uplines accordingly

  • Different semisuspension variations using bamboo and taking advantage of what it uniquely offers

In the workshop, we’ll do semisuspension using the following ties:

  • A suspendable single column tie

  • A futomomo

  • A freely chosen upper body harness suitable for suspension, with the ability to place an upline to the side, front, or back. Any upper body harness is acceptable, including hands-free harnesses.

Please make sure you are already proficient with these ties
, as instruction in them is not part of the workshop content.

The workshop is intended for tying pairs who have previously worked together and have established mutual trust.

Requirements for riggers:

  • Extensive experience with floor-based bondage, both improvised and using known patterns

  • Understanding of different frictions and how to tie with even tension

  • Suspension experience: comfortable with semisuspensions and locks using a ring or bamboo

  • A stable single column tie that can be suspended

  • Awareness of the risks involved during tying and suspension

Requirements for bottoms:

  • Good awareness of your own body and its needs

  • Substantial experience being tied on the floor and some experience with semisuspension or full suspension

  • Understanding of suspension risks and ability to communicate effectively

  • Knowledge of nerve risks and how to monitor them during a tie

What you’ll need for this workshop:

  • A sufficient amount of rope for semisuspension

  • At least 2 ropes in good condition for suspension lines, and rope for tying the body

  • Carabiners, if you wish to use them

  • Non-slippery clothing for the bottom

If it appears during the workshop that participants do not meet the required skill level, instructors reserve the right to ask participants to sit out certain exercises or to perform them at a safer, more lower skill level.
